QS Freezes when using VSS

If using the Advanced Option for snapshots using Volume Shadow Copy, and things freeze, check to see if you have the ASROCK Xfast USB program installed.

If you do, remove it and see if the trouble goes away.

This program is well know to cause the Windows Volume Shadow Copy service to completely stop, which in turn causes QS Backup to freeze.

Access to a remote machine (eg NAS) by username and password fails

If you get an Error 1312 when trying to connect to a remote machine with a username and password, then put the remote machine name, followed by backslash, as a PREFIX to the username.

Example:
– Access to machine called NAS, on share \\NAS\fred
– User name is fred
– Password is PassW0rd

Set up the remote location as you normally do.
Enter the user name as NAS\fred
Enter the password as you normally do.

Backing up Outlook OST files

Outlooks has 2 kinds of local postbox files: OST and PST.

PST is the kind commonly used by home users with POP or IMAP email.
OST is the kind commonly used with Microsoft Exchange (including Office 365).

By default, Windows VSS will not snapshot and allow backup of OST files. It does allow PST files just fine.

The reason for not doing a snapshot and backup of OST files seems lost in the mists of time, but is primarily to do with making machines busy, and the fact that the whole contents of the OST file can be recovered from the Exchange server anyhow.

More information is available HERE.

If you do want to backup the OST files, you need to make a registry change. IF UNUSRE DO NOT PROCEED, SEEK HELP. REGISTRY CHANGES CAN CAUSE HARM.

Procedure:

  • Run REGEDIT
  • Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshot
  • Delete the entry for OutlookOST
  • Close REGEDIT
  • Restart the PC
  • IMPORTANT: Subsequent windows updates have been seen to put the setting back, so if OST backups stop working again, repeat the above procedure.
